Water and the Skin

Water and the skin

The skin acts as a water reservoir and participates in the fluid regulation of the whole body. The skin tissue volume of a 70kg man is about 7 litres. The extracellular matrix (water outside the cells) comprises two-thirds of this volume, and consists of about 50% fluid. One third of the tissue layer consists of interchangeable water which is stored mainly in the dermis. Skin thickness depends on the amount of collagen fibres, cellular substances and interstitial fluid content. The fluid content of the skin determines its biophysical properties such as turgor, elasticity and distensibility. Increasing fluid content leads to a greater skin thickness.

Effects of dehydration

It is not surprising, therefore, that dehydration is associated with changes in the appearance of the skin. In mild dehydration the skin may appear flushed, dry and loose, with a loss of elasticity. (Loss of elasticity may be demonstrated by pinching the skin on the back of the hand and observing the time taken for the skin to return to its normal position. Recovery will be slower if the body is dehydrated.) However, loss of skin elasticity is also associated with ageing, and hence, dehydrated skin may appear to be older than it actually is.

Eisenbeiss et al used ultrasound to study the effects of body water and skin thickness. They found that slight changes in the water distribution of the body, eg due to water retention or dehydration, influence the thickness and echodensity of the dermis, eg skin thickness increased after fluid infusion. These changes were more pronounced at the forehead than on the lower legs.

Keeping Healthy This Winter

Keeping Healthy This Winter

How Flu is Spread

Most cough, cold and flu viruses are passed from person to person in respiratory droplets spread by coughing and sneezing. A forceful cough can expel particles as far as 25 ft.

Touching something with virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes may also transmit infection.

Adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before getting symptoms and up to 7 days after getting sick. That means that you can give someone the flu before you know you're sick as well as while you are sick.

These Good Health Habits Help You Stay Well

Wash your hands frequently and avoid putting your hands near your mouth, nose and eyes. Sneeze or cough into a tissue and throw it away.

Wipe down shared surfaces, like countertops, doorknobs, keyboards and telephones. Flu virus can live on a surface for up to an hour.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

Most viral germs are airborne, so avoid contact with people who are sick. If your coworker is ailing, steer clear of his or her sneezes. If you are caring for an ill family member, wash your hands habitually and minimize proximity to his or her face.

Don't smoke. Quitting is always a good idea, but it's even more important now.

Eat healthy food. You are what you eat, and healthy eating will support your immune system.

Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks as they contribute to dehydration.

Make time for moderate exercise in the fresh air.

Get plenty of rest.

If You Have A Respiratory Illness

Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Used tissues contain respiratory secretions and should be disposed of in the nearest waste receptacle.

Clean your hands. Wash your hands with soap and water, alcohol-based hand rub, or antiseptic handwash after having contact with respiratory secretions and contaminated objects/materials.

These recommendations are based on the Draft Guideline for Isolation Precautions: Preventing Transmission of Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings. Recommendations of the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC), CDC

The Water Puzzle

From Institute of Heartmath Research Center

Water is the universal medium for all biological activity. Nearly two-thirds of the human body and one-half of each of our organs, by volume, consists of water. This amounts to approximately 10 gallons of water, largely enclosed within trillions of cells. Increasing evidence indicates that the water within living cells is highly structured, arranged in various intermolecular conformations held together by extensive hydrogen bonding networks, giving it quite different properties and behavior from bulk water. It appears, further, that the structuring of cellular water is critical to the healthy chemical functioning of the cell.

Increased knowledge of the mechanisms underlying electromagnetic and subtle information storage, amplification and transduction by water may open the doorway to comprehending how these processes operate in the water within us. This could aid in building a solid model to explain the effects of weak electromagnetic and subtle energies on living organisms, and, possibly, significantly expand our understanding of the function of water in biological systems. Studies designed to advance our understanding of water's role as a bridge between the worlds of energy and matter will provide a crucial link between the realms of science and spiritual phenomena, bear profound implications for the betterment of human and environmental health, and may well help lay the foundations for a newly emerging scientific paradigm.

Research by Dr. Mu Shik Jhon:

Dr. Mu Shik Jhon, President of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, and the Honorary Chair-Professor of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and a world authority in water research, firmly believes that water dominates life. He is the originator of the hexagonal water theory and has been actively disclosing its relationship with cancers and aging mechanism as well as possible healing effects.

Professor Jhon says that here are three different shapes of water. One is hexagonal hook-shaped, another is pentagonal hook-shaped and still another hexagonal chain-shaped.

In other words, water molecules exist not separately, but as a cluster of molecules of the same shape. The hexagonal water in liquid condition constantly transforms.

Professor Jhon has found through experiments as well as molecular simulations that there are three kinds of water as above and that the more closely water is combined with biomeolecules, the more hexagonal shape molecules the water contains. All these shows us that our bodies prefer hexagonal water.

Dr Jhon has also found through experiments on cancer and diabetic patients that the water molecules near their abnormal cells is disorderly and highly mutable than that near the normal cells. On the basis of such experiments, he reported that “structured water in cells play the role in maintaining normal condition of the cells and if, for some reason, the structure of water is damaged, cancer or diabetes arises.”

Through his recent research, Professor Jhon confirmed that there are more hexagonal water around the normal protein than around cancerous protein. He insists that it is not absurd attempt at all to explore possibilities of normalizing the cancerous or diabetic cells by improving water environment of cells. Professor Jhon advises us to increase drinking of hexagonal water, and if given a choice, should be the only water you drink!

Water and Flu?

A study recently published by a British researcher did indeed find that people who drink eight glasses of water a day have less chance of getting the flu, a stuffy nose or sore throat.

The study also found that people who drink only three glasses of water a day were five times more likely to get a dry nose or sore throat, increasing their susceptibility to bacteria.

David Lewis, the researcher who conducted the study, said the key is to keep the mucous membranes in the nose moist. "This acts like a sticky fly-paper to trap things like dust, dirt, and bacteria and prevent them from getting into the lungs," Lewis said. He also noted that dehydrated membranes are half as effective.

In addition, the study noted that drinking more water was linked to fewer respiratory infections, headaches, skin problems and constipation. Only one in six of the respondents in the study said they drank eight glasses of water a day.

So, drink up to your health!
